Driveshaft

Does your car or vehicle have a vibration?

It could be a driveshaft fault.

Can you hear a clicking noise from a constant velocity joint more commonly known as a CV Joint? Is your inner CV gaitor or boot split? Autoexperts Medway near Rochester can repair and replace all types of transmission faults on vehicles.

Driveshaft explained:

A driveshaft or propshaft is a mechanical component for transmitting torque and rotation from the gearbox to the road wheels.

The driveshaft allows for variations in the alignment and distance between the driving and driven components. Drive shafts frequently incorporate one or more universal or constant velocity joints. These joints are sometimes a splined joint or prismatic joint and quite often are just a slip on fit.

The term “driveshaft” is generally used in a transverse type engine or front wheel drive. It purpose is to transmit power to the wheels, especially the front wheels.
Several different types of drive shaft are used in the automotive industry:

  • One-piece drive shaft
  • Two-piece drive shaft
  • Slip-in-tube drive shaft

Slip-in-tube drive shaft is a new type that improves crash safety. It can be compressed to absorb energy in the event of a crash, so is also known as a collapsible drive shaft.

Common Faults:

The most common fault with a drive shaft is generally with the joint on the end. This joint is known as a constant velocity joint or CV joint. The main symptoms of a faulty CV is a clicking noise when the wheels are turning on full lock. These joints are lubricated with grease and are sealed in with a gaitor or rubber boot. Should this gaitor or boot come off or split and need replacing then they are generally one hours work plus the price of a new boot.
Occasionally a driveshaft may also have an inner cv joint. Should an inner joint, gaitor or boot be required, then it is necessary to remove the whole driveshaft to allow for a repair.
