ABS

Has your car got an Anti-lock Braking System fault?

Has your car got an ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) or Electronic Stability Program (ESP) warning light problem?

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Electronic Brakeforce Limitation (EBL) or Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) are all brake sensor faults. Autoexperts technicians in Gillingham can diagnose and as a result rectify this type of problem.

Warning Lights Explained:

ABS is a vehicle braking system that allows the wheels to maintain contact with the road while braking. It prevents the wheels from locking up and most of all avoids uncontrolled skidding. This traction control is made possible due to the use of wheel speed sensors that monitor the speed of the wheel.

Abbreviated Meanings:

  • ABS – Anti-Locking Braking System
  • ESC – Electronic Stability Control
  • ESP – Electronic Stability Program

The ABS has improved considerably over the years by the addition of other sensors. Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Stability Program are systems that detect loss of steering control. Both automatically apply the brakes to help “steer” the vehicle where the driver intends to go.

Other abbriviated systems are:-

  • EBD – Electronic Brakeforce Distribution
  • EBL – Electronic Brakeforce Limitation
  • DSC – Dynamic Stability Control
  • VSC – Vehicle Stability Control

These systems are all similar and hence its simply their name that varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

A Short History?

In 1995, three automobile manufacturers introduced ESC systems. Mercedes-Benz, was the first to implement their ESP system. Later that same year, rather than copy Merecedes, BMW introduced their DSC system. Consequently Toyota followed suit with their VSC version.

As a result of this successful introduction, other manufacturers followed suit and nearly all cars have their own similar variation.

Auto Experts Medway in Gillingham can diagnose these warning light faults should they appear.

How do these systems work?

Some EBD, EBL or DSC systems also reduce engine power until control is regained. This computerised technology has been designed to improve a vehicle’s stability, consequently minimizing the loss of control. It does this by detecting and reducing the loss of traction or when a vehicle is skidding. As a result these systems help to keep driving safer for all Medway road users.
