HEADGASKET OVERHEATING RUNNING PROBLEM WATER LOSS EXHAUST SMOKE MEDWAY

Is the engine overheating or does it have a running problem? Is steam or smoke coming from your exhaust or is the engine suffering with low compression? Autoexperts Medway in Gillingham near Rochester and Chatham in the centre of Medway can check into your vehicles problems. All these symptoms could be a sign that the head gasket needs replacing.

What is a Head Gasket?

The head gasket is the seal situated between the cylinder head at the top of the engine and the block that holds the pistons, conrods and crankshaft. The head gasket enables the engine to get compression within the combustion chamber by allowing the inlet and exhaust gases to be contained within the engine. It fundamentally ensures that the oil, coolant, air and fuel mixture remain separated.

Reasons Why They Fail:

The main reason why a head gasket might fail will be down to an overheating engine. Should an engine be low on coolant or oil, an engine will run hotter than normal. When something gets hotter it expands or becomes softer than normal. The head gasket in these circumstances may falter and allow the oil to mix with the water. It could also cause coolant to escape into the exhaust system or combustion chamber which can cause rough running. If this happens the coolant or leaking oil may cause steam or smoke to pass through the exhaust system.

Should the oil and water mix the engine oil emulsifies and turns into a sludge. This sludge mix can be found in either the engine or the cooling system.

A cylinder head over time may corrode internally causing coolant or gases to begin leaking. This may cause your engine to have low compression and lead to your head gasket needing to be renewed because of failure.
