Your brake shoes could be faulty. Are they making a grinding noise, squeak or squeal?
Gillingham’s Autoexperts Medway is the place to go if they are worn out and need replacing.
The brake shoe carries the brake lining, which is riveted or glued to the shoe. When the brake is applied, the shoe moves and presses the lining against the inside of the brake drum holding it firm.
Modern cars either have disc brakes all round, or discs at the front and drums at the rear. An advantage of discs is that they can cool more quickly than drums so there is less risk of overheating. As rear shoes become worn there is a chance that they may begin to squeal or squeak. The build up of brake dust causes a squeal or squeak which can lead them to become locked on or jammed.
The reason for retaining drums at the rear is that a drum is more effective than a disc as a parking brake. Vehicles suffering with squealing noise will require the brakes to be serviced to stop them from squeaking. If a vehicle’s brakes are grinding it is likely that the car will also require the brake shoes to be replaced at the same time.
