The vacuum brake servo is used in most modern hydraulic brake systems, they are attached between the master cylinder and the brake pedal. It provides braking assistance by using a stored vacuum to increase braking force applied by the driver to the brake pedal.
The Brake servo consist of a hollow housing with a movable rubber diaphragm that creates two chambers. When attached to the intake manifold of the engine or the vacuum pump, the pressure in one of the chambers of the unit becomes lower. This lowered vacuumed pressure allows the force exerted onto the pedal to increase considerably and enables better braking efficiency.
The most common fault with brake servos will be a split breather pipe resulting in a sucking or whooshing noise. This can give you the effect of a very hard brake pedal.
