Will your engine not start? Are the car battery terminals loose or it may have a dead cell?
Call Autoexperts Medway in Gillingham and we will test your car battery. We are the local garage to have your battery tested and possibly replaced.
The vehicle battery provides a source of electrical power to start the car and supply the electrical circuits. They are usually rated at 12 volts and are divided into 6 equal sections called cells and separated by a cell divider.
The individual cells contain plates and diluted sulphuric acid. As a result once these plates are charged they store electric power.
These lead-calcium plates increase in size as the active material absorbs sulfate from the acid during discharge. In contrast they decrease as they give up the sulfate during charging.
The plates gradually break down over time and shed a paste. This shed paste can fall to the bottom of a battery over time and will create a short circuit. Due to the fact that they come in contact with the cells consequently the battery to die.
This is the reason why it is not good to allow a battery to just lie idle. An idle battery will continue to absorb the sulfate until the plates increases and eventually short circuit killing a cell and the battery.
Call into Autoexperts Medway in Gillingham, we can test your battery and inform you of its condition.
Each cell has its own amount of power which collectively gives the total power for the battery.
These are general voltage ranges per cell:
• Fully charge: 2.13V
• Fully discharge: 1.95V
A fully charged battery should read approximately 2.13V X 6 cells = 12.78Volts
It is important to remember that after charging a lead acid battery it should be left to stand for at least half an hour before retesting to get an accurate voltage reading. This is because during the charging process the battery will become warm and temperature will affect voltage.
Electrical current flows from the batteries positive terminal to the car starter motor and electrical circuit’s fuse box. The circuits are completed by using the vehicle body as the ground or earth.
