What is a DPF?

First of all, a DPF is a Diesel Particulate Filter. It is designed to remove diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. Diesel particulate filters usually remove 85% or more of the soot. Under certain conditions, it can become so efficient that they can remove 100% making some diesel engines cleaner than petrol engines.

Filter Regeneration:

Many DPF’s are designed to burn off the soot through the use of a catalyst. As well as by active means such as a fuel burner. A fuel burner heats the filter to soot combustion temperatures. This is accomplished by engine programming. The programme increases the exhaust temperature by using an extra fuel injector in the exhaust stream. This injector injects fuel to react with a catalyst element. As a result it burns off accumulated soot and converts it to ash. This is known as “filter regeneration”.
