Have you got a CV joint gaiter worn or split? Can you feel a vibration through the steering column? Autoexperts Medway in Gillingham can diagnose and replace constant velocity joints or secure and fit a split CV gaiter
Constant Velocity joints or CV joints allow a drive shaft to transmit power through a variable angle. It can do this at a constant rotational speed. They are mainly used in front wheel drive vehicles. Many modern rear wheel drive cars with independent rear suspension typically use CV joints at the ends of the rear axle halfshafts.
Constant Velocity joints are protected by a rubber boot or CV gaiter. Cracks and splits in the boot will allow contaminants in, which would cause the joint to wear quickly.
As front wheel drive systems became more popular, the shortcomings of universal joints in front axles became more apparent.
The Constant Velocity joint was designed and solved many of the problems that the universal joint experienced. They allowed a smooth transfer of power despite the wide range of angles through which they were bent.
The most common fault with a CV joint is a constant clicking noise mainly on full lock. Other symptoms may be a constant droning noise or vibration at certain speeds. All these faults are typical of a worn out CV joint and will require either a replacement CV joint or a new driveshaft fitted.
A common MOT failure is a split CV gaiter or it may have simply come off and just simply needs to be resecured.
