An exhaust system is a network of piping. Its designed to guide exhaust gases away from the engine. The entire system directs the burnt gases to the rear and downwards.
The complete exhaust system will be made up of a combination of exhaust pipes. Their individual names are Manifold, downpipe, catalysts, silencers, and boxes. Touching any part of the exhaust can be extremely dangerous because it gets very hot.
The manifold is bolted to the engine and is sealed to the head by means of a gasket. The exhaust becomes extremely hot when the engine is running. Consequently the most common fault with a manifold will be a blown or leaking gasket. Similarly a cracked manifold is another common fault. Some manifolds include the catalyst as a part of its design.
The exhaust downpipe is generally bolted to the manifold and it normally has a flexible section. As a result this flexible section is a weak point as it is designed to allow for engine movement in relation to a rigid vehicle body. It uses a gasket or sealing ring that over time can perish and begin to leak.
A catalyst or catalytic converter converts pollutants before they are emitted to the atmosphere. The catalyst ensures that these gases are less harmful and it helps to controls the vehicle’s emissions.
A silencer is known as a centre or intermediate box. It is designed to muffle and reduce the loud noise from a running engine. A centre silencer can also be a part of a central pipe that directs the exhaust fumes away from the engine.
Similarly the rear exhaust box will reduce noise further and is attached to the centre silencer or pipe. The rear exhaust box has a tailpipe attached which directs the exhaust gases towards the ground.
