A water pump is a simple pump driven by a drive belt connected to the crankshaft of the engine. The pump circulates coolant whenever the engine is running. The faster the engine runs the faster the water pump rotates.
The water pump uses centrifugal force to send fluid to the outside while it spins. consequently it draws fluid from the centre continuously. The water pump circulates the coolant around the cooling system including the vehicle heater.
The inlet to the pump is located near the centre so that fluid returning from the radiator hits the pump vanes. The pump vanes fling the coolant to the outside of the pump. where it can enter the engine.
The coolant leaving the pump flows first through the engine block and cylinder head, then into the radiator and finally back to the pump
A whirring noise from your engine could mean that a pulley wheel may be worn out and needs replacing. It is extremely important to have any noises checked as soon as possible as many water pumps are driven by the cambelt. A pulley or pump failure could result in engine damage and become very costly.
Above all, engines should be allowed to completely cool down before attempts are made to inspect or replace leaking or damaged coolant components. Because exposure to the extremely hot coolant will cause serious bodily injury. Radiator coolant should be handled with care whilst renewing, because it is extremely poisonous.
