Your vehicle may have a weak spark due to your HT leads breaking down.
Book now if your vehicle has a running problem. Our mechanics have the knowledge and capability to test HT leads at our workshop in Gillingham in Medway.
High Tension leads are more commonly referred to as HT leads. They are the wires that connect a distributor or ignition coil to each of the spark plugs of a petrol engine.
HT leads, like many engine components, wear out over time. Each lead contains only one wire and allows current to flow from the distributor or coil to the spark plug. The electrical circuit is completed through the earthed engine via the spark plug which is connected to the negativeĀ battery terminal.
HT leads have an outer insulation made of a very flexible material such as silicone or rubber, furthermore it is heat resistant. As a result the thick insulation prevents arcing from the cable to an earthed engine component, a rubber boot covers each terminal.
When your your vehicle requires a new set of HT leads, spark plugs are also generally replaced. Quite often there will be visible signs that the spark has been arcing down the side of HT lead terminal. Consequently there will be scorch marks on the side of the spark plugs.
Book now for one of our mechanics to carry out some initial basic checks. These checks include checking the resistance of the Ht leads. Our mechanics will highlight any weakness and give you the correct diagnosis.
In modern systems the ignition or spark is electronically controlled by the ECU. The ECU acts on information given from a cam or crank sensors. Some of these modern systems do not have HT leads because the coils are placed directly on top of the spark plug (coil-on-plug or Direct Ignition).
A breakdown in a HT lead can result in a weak spark as a result the engine may misfire and cause rough running. This will affect fuel consumption and consequently have a loss of power. The total failure of the main HT king lead will probably cause the vehicle not to start at all.
