It could be play in a steering arm or drum stick. All these symptoms could be a sign that your steering rack worn? Autoexperts Medway in Gillingham can repair or replace all steering components. Is your car’s steering rack boot gaiter split, if so it will need to be replaced?
A Steering Rack is a toothed bar and is driven by a cog on the end of a shaft called a pinion. Its objective is to convert rotational motion from the steering wheel into linear motion. Consequently this will move the wheels from side to side.
The mechanism may be power-assisted, usually by hydraulic or electrical means.
A circular gear called “the pinion” engages its teeth on a linear “gear” bar called “the rack.” Rotational motion applied to the pinion causes the rack to move relative to the pinion. As a result it translates the rotational motion of the pinion into linear motion.
The most common fault on a steering rack is a worn track rod end. When a track rod end is worn slight movement can be felt. Similarly another common fault is also to do with excessive movement or play in the steering arm joint (or drum stick). This particular part is partially hidden beneath the steering rack boot which is a rubber cover or gaitor protecting the teeth of the rack. Should this boot become split it can allow the elements to contaminate the toothed area of the rack causing the steering to wear quickly.
Any worn steering parts can effect the steering and you may feel your vehicle pulling to one side. Any movement in the steering rack could make a rattle or knocking sound meaning it needs to be repaired.
