How It Works:

When the coolant in the engine heats up it expands. The pressure in the closed system must increase and allows the coolant to flow into the expansion bottle or reservoir tank. The radiators expansion bottle collects excess coolant from the radiator so that the coolant does not leak to the atmosphere.

This is known as a sealed or closed coolant system. The main benefit is that the coolant is not weakened through constant topping up. This helps to avoid having to replace antifreeze on an annual basis.

Coolant overflow ceases when the thermostat modulates the rate of cooling to keep the temperature of the coolant at optimum. When the engine coolant cools or when the engine is switched off, the fluid returns to the radiator.
