The brake wheel cylinder is a component in a drum brake system. It is located at the top of the wheel above the brake shoes. Its function is to exert force onto the shoes. It presses the shoe lining against the inside of the drum thus holding it firm by using the force of friction.
They are normally inexpensive and relatively easy to replace. As rear shoes become worn there is a chance of a build up of brake dust causing a squeal or squeak. It is the combination of brake dust and leaking wheel cylinder with brake fluid which can cause them to stick.
