Clutch

Does your vehicles clutch feel worn out? Does it crunch or is it juddering?

Is it slipping when driving up hill or is there a burning smell or a noisy bearing? Auto Experts Medway in Chatham Medway can replace or fit clutches in all types of vehicles.

What is a Clutch?

A clutch is a mechanical device that engages and disengages the power transmission, especially from driving shaft (engine crankshaft) to driven shaft (gearbox)

Clutches ultimately rely on frictional forces for their operation. The purpose of friction clutch is to connect a moving member to another that is moving at a different speed, often to synchronize the speeds or to transmit power.

How it works:

The flywheel is attached to the engine’s crankshaft and spins along with it. The clutch disk is in between the pressure plate and the flywheel, and is held against the flywheel under pressure from the pressure plate. When the engine is running and the clutch is engaged (i.e., clutch pedal up), the flywheel spins the clutch plate and hence the gearbox shaft. As the clutch pedal is depressed, the throw out bearing is activated, which causes the pressure plate to stop applying pressure to the clutch disk. This makes the clutch plate stop receiving power from the engine, so that the gear can be shifted without damaging the gears. When the clutch pedal is released, the throw out bearing is deactivated, and the clutch disk is again held against the flywheel, allowing it to start receiving power from the engine.

Common Faults:

The most common fault with a clutch will be clutch wear. The type of symptoms if you feel that your clutch has worn out will be slipping, clutch judder, noisy bearing, burning smell or crunching when trying to put in gear.

A slipping clutch can be more obvious if you are driving up hill, you will notice that the engine revs begin to increase and the drivability will feel laboured. You may even begin to get a burning smell.
