Clutch

Do your gears crunch when changing gear or can you feel a judder?

Does your vehicle’s clutch feel worn out? Is it slipping when driving up hill or is there a burning smell or a noisy bearing? Autoexperts Medway in Gillingham can replace or fit clutches in all types of vehicles.

What is a Clutch?

A clutch is a mechanical device that engages and disengages the power from the engine to the gearbox.

Clutches ultimately rely on frictional forces for their operation. The purpose of friction clutch is to connect a moving member to another that is moving at a different speed. This will often synchronize the speeds to transmit the power.

How it works:

The flywheel is attached to the engine’s crankshaft and spins along with it. The clutch disk is in between the pressure plate and the flywheel It is held against the flywheel under pressure from the pressure plate. When the engine is running and the clutch is engaged the flywheel spins the clutch plate hence the gearbox shaft.

As the clutch pedal is depressed, the throw out bearing is activated. This causes the pressure plate to stop applying pressure to the clutch disk. The clutch plate then stops receiving power from the engine, so that the gear can be shifted without damaging the gears. When the clutch pedal is released, the throw out bearing is deactivated, and the clutch disk is again held against the flywheel, allowing it to start receiving power from the engine.

Common Faults:

The most common fault with a clutch will be wear. The type of symptoms if it has worn out will be slipping, a judder or a noisy bearing. Similarly you might get a burning smell or crunching when trying to put in gear.

A slipping clutch can be more obvious if you are driving up hill, you will notice that the engine revs begin to increase and the drivability will feel laboured. You may even begin to get a burning smell.
