Particulate pdf Filters

Running problems, no acceleration, going into limp mode are symptoms that your particulate filter is blocked.

A forced regeneration by Auto Experts Medway in Chatham Medway could be the answer to these running problems.

What is a DPF?

A DPF ia a Diesel Particulate Filter and is designed to remove diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. Diesel particulate filters usually remove 85% or more of the soot, and under certain conditions can become so efficient that they can remove almost 100% making some diesel engines cleaner than petrol engines.

Filter Regeneration:

Many PDF are designed to burn off the accumulated particulate either through the use of a catalyst or by active means such as a fuel burner which heats the filter to soot combustion temperatures. This is accomplished by engine programming to run in a manner that increases exhaust temperature in conjunction with an extra fuel injector in the exhaust stream that injects fuel to react with a catalyst element to burn off accumulated soot and convert it to ash. This is known as “filter regeneration”.

Regeneration Process:

The regeneration process occurs at road speeds higher than can generally be attained on city streets; vehicles driven exclusively at low speeds in around town traffic can require periodic trips at higher speeds to clean out the DPF. Constant around town low revs driving may cause the DPF to become blocked. Our technicians at Auto Experts Medway have been very successful in carrying out a forced regeneration on many different vehicles which can only be carried out with the aid of diagnostic equipment.

Will not Regenerate?

If the driver ignores the warning light and waits too long to operate the vehicle above 40 miles per hour, the DPF may not regenerate properly, and continued operation past that point may spoil the DPF completely. When a DPF becomes blocked the vehicle generally goes in to a limp mode affecting acceleration and causing an EML to illuminate.

In extreme cases a forced regeneration may not be possible and the DPF will either have to be removed and physically cleaned or replaced, both of which can become time consuming and potentially expensive.
