What is a Fan Belt?

A serpentine belt, also known as a multi-vee, poly-v, or multi-rib belt, is more commonly known as a fan belt or an auxiliary drive belt. It is a single, continuous belt used to drive multiple peripheral devices fitted on an engine. The devices that are driven by a serpentine belt are items like an alternator, power steering pump, water pump, air conditioning compressor, etc. The belt may also be guided by an idler pulley or a belt tensioner which may be spring-loaded, hydraulic, or manual.

The Advantages:

An auxiliary drive belt is more efficient than the older multiple belt system and may use less space in the engine compartment. The belt may be put under increased tension without stretching this reduces slip, which can increase the fan belts life and mechanical efficiency.
Reduced slip reduces the load on the engine, increasing fuel economy and available power. V-belts have a tendency to “flip over” in the pulley groove at high RPM when the belt stretches. The serpentine belt is also much easier to maintain and replace, since there is no need to remove multiple belts in order to replace one of them.

The Disadvantages:

The drawback of using a serpentine belt cracks, snaps, breaks or becomes loose, the vehicle instantly loses multiple critical functions such as the power steering pump and battery charging.
However, the belt typically gives ample visual warning of impending failure; deep cracks may appear or it may begin to squeal or squeak due to slipping. Sometimes it may totally shed several grooves (ribs) while continuing to function normally before snapping.
