A camshaft is a part of an internal combustion engine. It is a cylindrical rod running the length of the cylinder head which has a number of oblong lobes protruding from it. The camshaft is used to operate poppet valves; there is one cam lobe for each valve. The cam lobes force the valves open by pressing on the valve as the camshaft rotates.
The relationship between the rotation of the camshaft and the rotation of the crankshaft is of critical importance. The valves must be opened and closed at the appropriate time during the stroke of the piston. This opening and closing of the valves, if not synchronised exactly, can cause a ticking or tapping noise from the top of the engine. Hence the engine will not run efficiently and there could be a lack of power. In extreme circumstances a badly timed camshaft may cause irreparable damage.
The camshaft is retained into the cylinder head and is lubricated with the engine oil so that it does not become worn. Each valve has its own individual oil seal as well as the camshaft at the pulley end. Over time these oil seals can become worn and eventually leak and cause excessive oil loss.
