What is a Timing belt?

A timing belt, timing chain or cambelt is a part of an internal combustion engine. Their job is to synchronise the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft. When set up correctly they allow the engine’s valves to open and close at the correct time.
A timing belt is a belt that has teeth on the inside surface, while a timing chain is a roller chain. In an interference engine the timing belt or chain is critical in preventing the piston from striking the valves.

Why Replace?

Timing belts must be replaced at the manufacturer’s recommended distance or time periods. A snapped cambelt can result in complete breakdown and possible catastrophic engine failure. The owner’s manual is the source of timing belt replacement intervals. Each vehicle manufacturer will have its own individual recommended replacement guide, typically every 40,000 to 100,000 miles.

Common Failure Symptoms:

The usual failure modes of timing belts will be either stripped teeth or an unravelling of the fibre cores. Correct belt tension is critical, too loose and the belt will whip. Similarly too tight and it will make a whining noise and put excess strain on the tensioner idlers or pulley. As a result this could cause it to derail. In either case belt life will be drastically shortened.

It is recommended and common to replace the timing belt as a kit. A kit will include any tensioner, idlers and pulleys as well as the actual belt itself. It is recommended to replace the water pump at the same time, especially if it is driven by the cambelt.
