Batteries

Is your battery warning light on?

Will your engine not start? Are the terminals loose or does the battery need testing? It may have a dead cell in the battery. Auto Experts Medway in Chatham near Gillingham and Rochester in Medway is the local garage to have your battery tested and possibly replaced.

The Battery:

The vehicle battery provides a source of electrical power to start the car and supply the electrical circuits. They are usually rated at 12 volts and are divided into 6 equal sections called cells and separated by a cell divider.

How they Work:

The individual cells contain plates and diluted sulphuric acid that once charged stores electric power. These lead-calcium plates inside the battery increase in size as the active material absorbs sulfate from the acid during discharge and decrease as they give up the sulfate during charging. The plates gradually break down over time and shed a paste, this shed paste will create a short circuit should it come in contact with the cells which will cause the battery to die. This is the reason why it is not good to allow a battery to just lie idle, an idle battery will continue to absorb the sulfate until the plates increases and eventually short circuit killing a cell and the battery. Call into Auto Experts Medway in Chatham in Medway, we can test your battery and inform you of its condition.

Voltage:

Each cell has its own amount of power which collectively gives the total power for the battery.
These are general voltage ranges per cell:
• Fully charge: 2.13V
• Fully discharge: 1.95V
A fully charged battery should read approximately 2.13V X 6 cells = 12.78Volts

It is important to remember that after charging a lead acid battery it should be left to stand for at least half an hour before retesting to get an accurate voltage reading. This is because during the charging process the battery will become warm and temperature will affect voltage.

Electrical current flows from the batteries positive terminal to the car starter motor and electrical circuit’s fuse box. The circuits are completed by using the vehicle body as the ground or earth.
