Water Pump

Is there coolant leaking from your engine or have you got a whirring noise?

Your water pump might be about to fail or it could be a pulley wheel worn. Auto Experts Medway in Chatham near Gillingham and Rochester in Medway can replace all your vehicles coolant parts from their centrally based garage in the heart of Medway.

The Water Pump:

A water pump is a simple centrifugal pump driven by a drive belt connected to the crankshaft of the engine. The pump circulates coolant whenever the engine is running. The faster the engine runs the faster the water pump rotates.

How It Works:

The water pump uses centrifugal force to send fluid to the outside while it spins, causing fluid to be drawn from the centre continuously. The water pump circulates the coolant around the cooling system and vehicle heater.

The inlet to the pump is located near the centre so that fluid returning from the radiator hits the pump vanes. The pump vanes fling the coolant to the outside of the pump, where it can enter the engine.

The coolant leaving the pump flows first through the engine block and cylinder head, then into the radiator and finally back to the pump
A whirring noise from your engine could mean that a pulley wheel may be worn out and needs replacing. It is extremely important to have any noises checked as soon as possible as many water pumps are driven by the cambelt. A pulley or pump failure could result in engine damage and become very costly.

Health and Safety:

The temperature of the engine’s coolant should be allowed to completely cool down before one attempts to inspect or replace leaking or damaged coolant components. Exposure to the extremely hot water will cause serious bodily injury. Hot coolant should be handled with care because it is extremely poisonous.
