Re-gassing

Is your Air conditioning not working?

Is it only blowing hot? Is there a fault with air blowing cooler than normal? The air-Con may just need re-gassing or charging. Auto Experts Medway in Chatham Medway could be cheaper than the specialists.

Air Conditioning Explained:

In the refrigeration cycle, heat is removed from inside a vehicle to the environment. A household fridge is an example of similar system because a fridge also transports the heat out of its interior to the environment or room in the same way.

Circulating refrigerant vapour enters the compressor which is located in the engine bay and is compressed to a higher pressure, resulting in a higher temperature as well. The hot, compressed refrigerant vapour is now at a temperature and pressure at which it can be condensed and is routed through a condenser, usually located in front of the car’s radiator.

The Condenser:

The condenser cools the refrigerant by the air flowing across the condenser coils and condenses into a liquid. Thus, the circulating refrigerant rejects heat from the system and the heat is carried away by the air. The condensed and pressurised liquid refrigerant is next routed through an expansion valve where it undergoes an abrupt reduction in pressure and lowers the liquid’s temperature.

The Evaporator:

The cold refrigerant is then routed through the evaporator which is located inside the vehicle and is normally associated or attached to the heating system. The air (which is to be cooled) blows across the evaporator, causing the liquid part of the cold refrigerant mixture to evaporate as well, further lowering the temperature. The warm air is therefore cooled. To complete the refrigeration cycle, the refrigerant vapour is routed back into the compressor.  The compressor can be driven by the car’s engine (e.g. via a belt) or by an electric motor.

Common faults:

The most common fault with air con is the loss of gas or pressure in the system. This can occur naturally over time or be due to a leak on the system allowing the gas to escape.
